A. A person who willfully takes possession of any goods, wares, or merchandise, the total value of which does not exceed $50.00, offered for sale by any wholesale or retail store or other mercantile establishment without the consent of the seller, with the intention of converting such goods, wares, or merchandise to his own use without having paid the purchase price therefor, is guilty of shoplifting.

B. Shoplifting shall be considered a misdemeanor.

C. A peace officer may, upon charge being made and without a warrant, arrest any person who he or she has reasonable cause to believe has committed or attempted to commit the crime of shoplifting. [Ord. 10912 § 7, 1997; Ord. 8920 § 3, 1980; Ord. 8573 § 3(B), 1977].
